Winter Rendezvous & Woodswalk at Fort de Chartres

November 2 & 3, 2019

WR poster design donated by Mitch Lopata, Lopata Design

This event features 18th and early 19th century camp life and re-enactors who participate in a muzzleloader woods walk shooting competition.

Soldiers, trappers, traders and Native Americans (as portrayed by historic re-enactors) demonstrating frontier life from 1700 to1820 will gather at the rendezvous. They’ll trade goods, buy supplies, and some will take part in a shooting contest that requires them to walk through the woods and fire flintlocks at pop-up targets. The event is open and free to the general public. This event presents a weekend of colorful clothing, hand-made crafts, period music, Eighteenth-century Rummage Faire and delicious food hosted by Les Coureurs des Bois de Fort de Chartres and sponsored by Les Amis du Fort de Chartres.

Update for 10/30/2019. If you are local, you know it started misting rain yesterday evening and has been doing that on and off ever since. That being said IDNR has shut down driving in to set up for the rest of the day today. This weather pattern is supposed to move out by early morning tomorrow and IDNR will reassess the grounds in the morning. We truly apologize for any inconvenience, but have to do our due diligence to take care of the place we all hold near and dear to our hearts! On a positive note, the weather looks great from Friday on so come on out and enjoy some time at the Fort de Chartres Winter Rendezvous! Thanks and we’ll keep you posted!

A preview of what the Annual June Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres has to offer!

There are a lot of special events at Fort de Chartres, but the Rendezvous held in June has always been the most popular. For 48 years now thousands of visitors and hundreds of participants have made the Rendezvous one of the biggest and best historic reenactments in the Midwest. ‘Course if you ask one of the participants they’ll tell you it IS the Biggest and it IS the Best anywhere, some call it “The Grand Daddy of them all!”  We’ll let you decide.

Visitors strolling through the fort will find artisan and craft demonstrations that include pottery, blacksmithing, metal-working in silver and pewter, felt-making, silk ribbon embroidery, weaving and woodworking. Many items will be for sale. Music pops up throughout the weekend with performances from fife-and-drum troops, string bands, folk duos, and more.

The River Gate Food Court will feature a variety of period food, drink and musical entertainment under a large tent.

The Rendezvous features 1700’s military units, traditional craft demonstrations, period music and dancing, black powder shooting events and cannon firings all from the time when France controlled what is now Illinois. Visitors can try their hand at throwing a tomahawk, buy hand-made crafts, learn about French kitchen gardens, watch swordsmen duel, taste delicious food, and much more.

Opening ceremonies occur both days at 10 AM followed by event activities, ending with a retreat ceremony at 5 PM. A dance for all participants and visitors will be held Saturday from 8 to 10 p.m. inside the Fort.

The Fort de Chartres 48th Annual June Rendezvous is made possible through the dedication of the Fort’s many volunteers and support organizations. This annual event is presented by Les Coureurs des Bois de Fort de Chartres and sponsored by Les Amis du Fort de Chartres, with additional event site support by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
